It is commonplace for New Thought music artists to thrive on delivering their music and being of service to as many people as possible. Shannon Modrell, like Karen Drucker and Rickie Byars-Beckwith, has the same qualities. Shannon Modrell shares the same attitude and philosophy too. What I mean by attitude is that Shannon is pointed and forthright about her active involvement in the New Thought Music movement. Here is a snippet of my interview with her:

Rob: What should the New Thought Music movement be?

Shannon: “Many facets: helping people to cultivate a personal relationship with Divinity. To embrace God within, and within all, however each person defines that. To heal anything that gets in the way of that.”

Rob: What genre are you?

Shannon: “Hard to define; I am incredibly eclectic. I guess if you had to label me I would be “Adult Contemporary tinged with World Fusion and Classical Pop”. Today I write in styles I would have never imagined a few years ago: Gospel, R&B, Celtic, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Pop, Rock, Adult Contemporary. I also love film score music! My musical mission in life is to share with others songs that encourage, uplift, and inspire us to know the true value of our place in the world, the true beauty of our essence. Whether about a joyous celebration of life, or a soothing message to get someone through a rough time, the songs I sing are tools for self-awareness, growth, and healing. My music celebrates our connection to our divine nature, each other and our planet.

Rob: Your new CD is titled “Speak Your Word!”?

Shannon: “Yes, Speak Your Word! is a combination of 11 original songs and chants and of various styles from Funk-Gospel-R&B to Caribbean, to Celtic. I will also offer back-up tracks and a songbook. Any music department of any size can use this music in their church, thanks to the Songbook and back-up tracks”

When asked what she felt was the most important thing about her music, Shannon said, “Helping people get in touch with their true value.” Shannon explained that this statement has many levels because ”My personal journey to understand the eternal essence within is a path in which the ‘true value’ is present every step along the way. We just have to learn to be open to it”

My final thought about Shannon Modrell: She is a bright light, a peer that shines amongst us.

Rob Wallace Grammy nominated film composer Rob Wallace has decades of experience writing music for film, video games, and digital multimedia projects. Numerous credits for projects include 134 video game credits including “Mario’s Missing Deluxe, “Monster Bash” for Apogee, Wayne’s World, Jeopardy, All the National Anthems of the world, Software Toolworks, Ultimate Underground, Sea Wolf – Grandeur – Scarab – for brilliant producer John Ratcliff. From there he created Lazy Cats Records producing 25 titles of mostly New Age, New Thought and Jazz music.

~by Shannon Modrell

Are you one of the MANY people who struggle with meditating?

Have you tried time and time again for the transformational tranquility that only meditation can bring only to give up in frustration?

I sing the praises of all the wonderful things meditation can do for us, but despite having meditated for years I can assure you I still don’t do it perfectly. And here’s a secret: no one does! I have, however, found many techniques that help make the process easier. Here are just a few:

1. Movement

Sometimes we just have too much energy bouncing around in us to sit still and still our thoughts. Engaging in some kind of brief physical activity before meditating can go a long way toward helping us access those sounds of silence. That may seem ironic, but the reason it works is because it allows us to express (move out) built-up physical and emotional energy (they’re actually the same thing) that wants to come out. Exercise, walking, dancing, Tai Chi – all of these can help clear a space within that is primed for peace. Pick your favorite! The good news is that the movement doesn’t necessarily have to be intense unless that feels right to you.

2. Writing

Getting thoughts and emotions down on paper is another very effective way to move energy out and create a space within for silence. Just set the pen to the page and let yourself go. Without editing, write whatever thoughts spring up – no one else ever has to see it so don’t worry about spelling, sentence structure or grammar. Side note: you wouldn’t believe how many songs, speech ideas, workshop ideas and articles have popped out of me from my doing this very thing! In fact the article you are reading right now came about because I was trying to meditate this morning and struggled because I kept getting the urge to write (grin).

3. Guided Imagery

Listening to a guided imagery CD can help focus the mind and prepare it for silent meditation. These were really popular in the 80’s but they are still a great tool. I’ve used them for years and I absolutely love them! If you can’t find them in your local big box bookstore, try metaphysical bookstores. Unity churches and Centers For Spiritual Living often carry them too.

4. Meditate BEFORE you Caffeinate!

We all know caffeine is a stimulant. It stimulates not only the body but also the thoughts, which can make it really hard to quiet them. I do know some people who seem to be exceptions to this rule. They can slam down a cup of coffee and then go straight into a deep meditative state (or even to sleep). But all the people I know who can do this and still meditate effectively have two things in common: 1. an extremely high tolerance to caffeine, AND 2. years of practice meditating! Perhaps you are one of these exceptions, but If you struggle with meditation, you may want to try doing it before the am cup of joe. Same goes for sodas and black or green tea.

5. Let Go of Having to Do it Right

In other words, let go of the outcome. It really helps to let go of the expectation that we will achieve some perfect state of silence – or bliss – or oneness – or whatever we think the goal of meditation is supposed to be and just allow ourselves the freedom to do it imperfectly. I’ve meditated for over 20 years to date yet there are times when my mind just never shuts up through the whole process. Doesn’t matter. The most important thing is that we show up and do it. The Universe, the Divine, Spirit ALWAYS honors our intention. And it helps to remember that a meditation practice is called a practice for a reason!

Do you have some favorite tips to help you meditate? Please share them in the comment section below!

~by Shannon Modrell

Are you snow-blind to your own talents?

In the 80′s my husband Brent worked for a family who owned a popular restaurant chain in Houston TX. J.R., the man who trained Brent for his managerial position, taught him to start each day by walking the perimeter of the restaurant to look for anything amiss that might need to be addressed: an overlooked soda can sitting on a ledge, a board coming loose, dead flowers in the landscaping, etc.

He stressed the importance of seeing with fresh eyes each day because of our human tendency to get snow-blind to those things that are in the environment that we become accustomed to. Brent jokes that after a few weeks of training he used to rib J.R. because he often caught things that even J.R. had overlooked.

This is a great analogy for what we tend to do with our talents and creative gifts.

We are often completely snow-blind to the true magnitude of our special gifts because we are so close to them. They are so much a part of us and feel so normal to us that they just flat seem insignificant!

All my life I thought everyone could sing acappella because it came very naturally to me. I sang to myself constantly and automatically everywhere I went: the grocery store, work, home, the mall – everywhere. It wasn’t until I was in my 20′s that people started commenting on how amazed they were that I could do this, always declaring “That’s such a hard thing to do!” I would think “What on earth are they talking about? It’s the easiest thing in the world – everyone can do this!” Finally, after hearing it from enough people I started realizing that, no, not everyone could easily sing acappella.

But as much of a revelation as this was, I still thought that surely all singers could sing acappella. After all, I was a singer, so I thought that must be why it came so easily to me and not everyone else. But in time I found out that no, not all singers – even great singers – can sing acappella. I’d always taken it for granted because it’s so much a part of who I am. It took an outside perspective for me to see it as anything but an every day run-of-the-mill activity. (Though I do maintain that everyone can sing if properly taught (yes, even you!), not everyone has the same set of abilities when it comes to singing – but that’s another article!)

I know a young man from a very chaotic and dysfunctional family – we’ll call him Steve. Steve has never done well in school, has ADHD and struggles with severe depression. Besides being quite intelligent and creative he also has the ability to see – literally see – complicated math problems and their solutions in his mind’s eye as if they are written out on a screen. It comes so easily to him he doesn’t understand how others don’t see math as he does. Low self esteem plus the ease in which it comes to him keep him from seeing it for what it is: a very special ability that not everyone has.

Another thing about Steve; he gets so focused on traits and abilities in others that he does not have, (good grades, good social skills, organization), that he is snow-blind to his own gifts.

Most of us do this with our own talents. Has someone ever expressed how impressed they are at an ability they see in you or with something you did and your immediate thought was “What? There’s nothing special about that! All I did was….” Has it maybe happened several times throughout your life in regards to the same ability or set of abilities? Or do people ever say “You’d make a good_____!” or “You’d be great at_______!” and you immediately wonder how in the world their judgment could be so off-base?

Is it at all possible that they are actually on to something? Something you cannot see?

We all have multiple talents and abilities. And I know – I KNOW – that all of us have talents and abilities that still lie dormant. And they are often connected to those things we do every day and take completely for granted.

It doesn’t even have to be anything grand or flashy - I know people who’s very being makes others feel comfortable just as they are. Whenever they are around, others just feel a sense of emotional safety and feel like they are accepted for who and what they are and that they can just be themselves. That is a gift! And it just emanates from them naturally without their doing anything!

So what are some of the things that come easily to you, things that you often don’t give a second thought? Maybe even things you’ve done since childhood.

The next time someone comments on an ability they see in you and your first thought is “Are you crazy?!?”, what if you stepped back from that thought and considered that they just might be seeing the seeds of greatness within you….

In love and support

Can celebration really change your life?

I answer this the same way I answer the question “Can art and music really change your life?” And that is:

Imagine life without it!

Pretty Dull, huh? Not a life I would want to live!

But how often do we take the time to actually celbrate life’s momnets - espescially the small things? By taking the time to celbrate our own life events we make a huge declaration to opurselves that says “I am worthy. I matter!’

Besides, Celebration kicks up our endorphin levels!

I read an article recently on a study about the number one strength-builder that long-term happily married couples had in common. Several (I forget how many) happily married couples were studied for the secret of their long-term wedded success.

It wasn’t the quantity of things they had in common, the quality of their communication or the degree of grace with which they to weathered the storms of life together.

The number one strength-builder that all of the happy couples had in common was the fact that they celebrated one another’s accomplishments!

Whether big or small, the act of taking the time to celebrate life’s events was a significant cause of their long term happiness with one another.

I’m convinced that the same holds true for our degree of happiness in life in general: if we will take the time to celebrate our achievements, our accomplishments, our milestones, we radically improve our own happiness. When we know to the core of our being that we are worthy we not only begin to treat ourselves better and enjoy greater success in life, but we stop needing the world to reflect our worthiness back to us. Our craving for “hole-in-the-soul-fillers” dissipates:

  -approvalseeking
-external validation
-conspicuous consumption

-the need to control others
-giving to get something in return
-chasing glory rather than being of service
-compulsive over-eating
-spendaholic shopping

All of these create a vicious cycle that demands more and more in order to give us temporary relief from feelings of unworthiness and dissatisfaction.

Am I saying that celebrating life’s little moments can cure someone of all these behaviors entirely? No, of course not. But I know from personal experience and the experience of others that it’s a simple way to make a HUGE step in that direction!

So I support all of us in making it a priority to get in the habit of celebrating our accomplishments, no matter how large or small!

~by Shannon Modrell

It’s almost a misnomer to even call myself a healer. It seems to imply that I have some ability that others do not, and I know that is not true. We are all healers. Anyone can do hands-on-healing. It’s not a mark of distinction. All systems that teach it are merely ways to give it structure, but the raw ability is something we all possess.

So when I say I’m a healer, I’m really just making a declaration of truth that is universal.

Having worked with Hands on Healing and Reiki for about 7 years now, one of the most important things I’ve learned about it is to allow Spirit to do the work through me rather than using my own energy to do the healing. Why? Well, several reasons, actually:

1. God can do more through me than I can ever do myself.

It’s difficult to add anything to this point; it’s just something I’ve come to know. The finite mind cannot comprehend the infinite. Not fully, anyway.

The oddity of hands-on-healing is that sometimes I feel the energy flowing through me, sometimes I feel zip. Nadda. And conversely, sometimes the recipient feels it, sometimes not. What’s really fun is when one of us feels a powerful flow and the other feels nothing. So there really is no way to accurately judge whether or not it’s “doing anything” (more on this below).

  2. Being human, sooner or later our own energy “runs out”. Divine energy NEVER runs out.

What do I mean by, “runs out”? Aren’t we infinite beings without beginning or end? Yes, but our human form energy, our own vital essence does indeed have a limit. A very talented healer can produce great results by giving their own healing energy to another, but eventually that energy is going to burn out. Why? Because it is for the person who has it. A wise healer sets a conscious intention to allow divine energy to flow through them, not from them. The metaphor of being used as a vessel is a popular image for setting this intention.

3. Divine Intelligence knows what’s needed, where it’s needed, and how much is needed better than I do.

As a healer I cannot know the full story behind the cause of another person’s ailment, issue, or challenge. I may have an idea, an intuitive knowing, or an opinion, but I still only have a piece of the information (assuming I’m correct in my assessment). The body is a fascinating system: A person may experience pain or discomfort in one area of the body, but the cause may originate from an entirely different location.

This is why I don’t want to know too much about any particular ailment a person may have, because I don’t want my conscious mind to get in the way when I’m trying to follow my gut about where my hands need to be placed next. I prefer to trust God to prompt me through my intuition rather than limit my focus to whatever location I think needs the healing touch. Any verbal expression of what the recipient wants healed is actually a declaration of intention for themselves, rather than instruction for my benefit.

4. It’s not my responsibility to fix anything.

I cannot get wrapped up in worrying about whether or not what I’m doing is effective. First of all, that’s a great way to cut off the flow of energy. Second, I cannot create another person’s experience. Only the person receiving can choose that.

Divine energy is capable of bypassing emotional and mental obstructions in the recipient such as fear of the process, or skepticism about whether it’s working, but both refusal and willingness to receive the energy is totally within the recipient’s control. I can usually feel it when someone is blocking the energy and refusing to receive it. Often the person is unconscious of this resistance. But I can’t force them to be healed! I just have to let it go and trust that whatever is for the highest and best for this person will occur in Divine right timing. Hey, for all I know the energy may stay with them and be received years later! Fact is stranger than fiction, after all!

5. I cannot know what is the highest and best for another individual

I mean, come on now, we barely know what is the highest and best for ourselves! No matter how much I may want to grant another person relief, there is a very good reason that it’s out of my control: I don’t know everything. (see point #3). I cannot know what another soul’s choices are, what they came here to accomplish, or how they are here to do it. Though I fully know that we do not come here to just experience, we come here to heal, I cannot know what role another’s challenges play in their process.

Of course I want to eliminate suffering. But I cannot always know if someone’s suffering is a symptom of a larger problem or consequence of a destructive thought or behavior that is trying to get their attention. So I don’t allow my will to go into control- mode and try to force healing. I simply allow God to work through me and know that Divine Unconditional Love is ALWAYS the real truth.

Blessings,

Shannon

~by Shannon Modrell

Those of us in the various positive thinking movements spend a lot of time looking for a way to find the upbeat side of everything. Armed with our affirmations we strive to stay optimistic through good and challenging times because we know that our thoughts determine our experience of the world.

But 21 years of trial and error with this stuff has taught me that, like anything else, there is a time and place for this approach, and that trying to use positive thinking as a panacea cure-all gets us out of balance in a hurry.

Don’t get me wrong, learning to turn negative thoughts into positive ones IS a very effective tool. If our negative emotions are the result of habituated negative thinking, then yes, replacing the negative thought with something more positive is a powerful way to interrupt that pattern. I believe this so much that I have built a career around writing songs that help people do that very thing.

However there are also times when negative outlooks and unhappy moments spring up from something much deeper than just negative thoughts, and trying to use affirmations to fix it is like slapping a band-aid on a festering wound.

Sometimes when we are feeling stuck or blue, it’s because we have some need that isn’t being met or some unresolved pain to grieve.

If we don’t take the time to find out what need is within us, or allow the pain to have a voice, we will continue to be miserable, no matter how many affirmations we slather on it.

(Actually, the need to grieve unresolved pain is – well, a need – so we’re really back to the first idea: some need within us is asking to be met)

Sometimes we need to stop focusing momentarily - on the positive and spend a little time with our shadow and be willing to temporarily feel some pain. This is how we give it an opportunity to move out (emote, e-motion) and be healed, which eventually brings us back to homeostasis: balance, peace and harmony. (I write songs that facilitate that process, too.)

Once we know what the need is, we can begin to take steps to fill it, THEN we can begin using all of our other tools of affirmation, visualization, focusing on gratitude, etc. to improve our direction.

And it’s important to remember that this is a process. I sometimes have to remind myself of this, too. It’s natural to want to avoid pain, but if we can allow ourselves to get quiet and listen to the needs our spirit is whispering to us, pain resolves itself more quickly and we are better able to use all of those wonderful tools that make for a blissful outlook on life.

Peace and Blessings,

Shannon

~by Shannon Modrell

You know the story. You need or want to get something accomplished: write that report, plan that speech, create a beautiful work of art…

But the blank paper, the unformed lump of clay, the hazy song idea are screaming defiance at you endangering your motivation and magnifying just how far you really are from your goal.

We’ve all been there at times, myself included.

Fortunately I’ve learned one of the most powerful tools to get over that hump: dive in and let ourselves be led into the process, by the process.

Often when we have trouble getting started we need to just start somewhere – anywhere – and just move forward. Start writing. Dip the brush in the paint and put it on the canvas. Place the pencil on the paper and start making a mark.

Most everything I’ve ever created (including classes, articles, craft projects, songs, speeches, my blog, my Ezine) was because of this concept.

I’ll give you an example:

Often when I have an article to write I may have a vague idea of the concept that wants to come through, but it’s not completely formed. So I’ll start typing whatever comes to mind, freeform, without censoring and without caring if it makes sense. I follow the impulses of thoughts within me. Pretty soon catch-phrases and tidbits grow into sentences and concepts that begin to form the article. Then more ideas begin to flow and I keep writing. Then I’ll stop, re-read, cut-n-paste all over the place, insert transition statements and expand on the concept, reword things, and add ideas until it’s cohesive enough to do somebody some good. Before I know it, I have an article!

Remember that saying: “Leap and the net will appear?”…..

We open a floodgate of new inspiration when we take an action, but that doesn’t happen unless we take the action.

This is a matter of trusting that we can step out even without seeing where it will take us.

Waiting around for inspiration rarely – if ever – brings results. The same goes for waiting to “feel like it” and waiting for validation from others that we are qualified to do it.

Having trouble getting started? Try just jumping in and seeing where it takes you!

Peace,

Shannon

~by Shannon Modrell

“Wonderful creative soul, the truth is you won’t be able to give birth to your heart’s desire exactly the way you envision. Every creator holds a vision in his or her heart’s eye that is rarely exactly realized. It’s true, you may not have all the talent or smarts and energy you wish you had. You know what? It doesn’t matter. What does matter is you keep moving forward on what you most treasure. What is born and most importantly, the process of birthing your heart’s desire, contains all the meaning and joy and renewal you crave.” ~Jennifer Louden

People who don’t think of themselves as creative (and there are LOTS of them) are always surprised when I tell them that most of the things I create – whether artwork, jewelry, songs, speeches, even these articles – never turn out like I originally picture them or hear them. All they see is the finished product and they assume I have some grand ability that they do not possess.

They don’t realize what a moment-by-moment process it is to produce something out of seemingly nothing and they automatically compare my finished outcome to the lack of a complete vision in their own head.

Or they may have a fantastic mental picture about something they want to create, but become frustrated when their results are less than they had envisioned on the first go-round.

But as most any author, artist, songwriter, speaker, builder or event coordinator will tell you - nothing ever goes exactly as planned - no matter how extensively you plan it before hand.

Why?

Because once you step into the realm of “yes” by taking an action in the direction of your intention, who you are changes with each step. Each moment of the journey is entirely new.

This is one of those odd phenomena that can only be understood through experience!

The richest and juiciest writings, songs, performances, speeches, classes, humanitarian undertakings, etc. come about when we ride the waves of inspiration that flow through us and we allow ourselves to be guided and directed into a larger vision than anything we ourselves never imagined. But this is usually only revealed to us one stepping-stone at a time, and only fully gains momentum when we say “yes” and then take action.

So I propose we all agree to let go of comparing our efforts to those of others AND to the expectation we may have in our own minds and try to simply enjoy the process – the step-by-step journey of creation – trusting that it will be revealed to us one piece at a time. We cannot fully know the outcome because with each new moment of the process what we see, how we see it, and what we are ready to experience is continually evolving.

Peace and blessings,

Shannon

Do you ever suffer from comparison-itis?

Do you tend to avoid doing things because “it won’t be perfect”?

Do you ever worry that what you say or do won’t meet the approval of others?

There’s an old saying about criticism and gaining the acceptance and approval of others and it’s a powerful mantra for kicking self-doubt right out the door. It’s called the 4 SW’s:

“Some Will, Some Won’t, So What, Someone’s Waiting“

I see too many people hiding who they authentically are and not sharing their authentic gifts in the world because they feel they don’t measure up to some standard of how they should be or how they should express. Meanwhile the world isn’t getting the unique benefits of what they have to offer.

Brent and I watched a movie last weekend about the amazing Temple Grandin, PhD. To say that Temple had obstacles to overcome is a gross understatement.

Temple is famous for having designed livestock handling facilities that are more humane, more effective and produce better meat for less money. The systems Temple designed are used worldwide by major corporations. Temple revolutionized the livestock industry!

But here’s the catch:
Temple is autistic.
And a woman.
A woman who effected massive change in a VERY male dominated, machismo, slow to change industry.
In the 1960′s, no less!

How did she accomplish this? Her autism positioned her for several unique tendencies and abilities:

1) Difficulty relating to people led to a deep kinship with animals.

2) She possessed abilities to perceive patterns of behavior in the animals that enabled her to piece together clues to why current methods of handling were creating stress in the animals, causing unnecessary injuries, and eating up profits.

3) She taught herself to draft the blueprints of her unconventional designs and translate those scale drawings into 3 dimensional form in exquisite detail in her mind, executing a completely operational and successful prototype – with no training or experience. This was key in convincing ranchers to spend obscene amounts of money on systems that seemed outrageously ineffective by their own standards. (These are all common traits in persons with autism)

So what would seem to many like a death-sentence for productivity (they actually said that about autism back then) turned out to be the exact formula for Temple to create a massive contribution to the world. BTW, she is now considered “the most accomplished and well known adult with autism in the world” (see her website) She’s the author of numerous groundbreaking and books and articles on animal welfare and autism advocacy.

What if Temple said “I can’t convince a bunch of ranchers to treat livestock more humanely, I’m autistic, I’m a woman, and I have no engineering experience!” What if Helen Keller said “I can’t write inspiring books or fight for women’s suffrage, I’m deaf AND blind, no one will believe in me!” What if Einstein said “I can’t influence the world of physics, I’m dyslexic and failed in school!”

What we think is our greatest weakness usually turns out to be our greatest strength.

So the next time you’re tempted to hold yourself back in life because you think you don’t have what it takes, or believe no one would benefit from your contribution, I hope you’ll remember Temple Grandin…and the 4 SW’s:

Some Will, Some Won’t, So What? Someone’s Waiting!

Peace and Blessings,
